Publications

The publications of the Archaeological Society include:

  1. the series “Vivliotheke tes en Athenais Archaiologikes Hetaireias” (BΑE) (= The Library of the Archaeological Society at Athens), namely the individual publications of the Society,
  2. the journal Praktika tes en Athenais Archaiologikes Hetaireias (PAE) (= Proceedings of the Archaeological Society at Athens),
  3. the journal Archaiologike Ephemeris (ΑΕ),
  4. the journal To Ergon tes en Athenais Archaiologikes Hetaireias (Ergon) (= The Work of the Archaeological Society at Athens) and
  5. the journal “O Mentor”.

The three main publications of the Society, namely (1) the “Vivliotheke tes en Athenais Archaiologikes Hetaireias” (BΑE), (2) the Praktika (PAE) and (3) the Archaiologike Ephemeris (ΑΕ) constitute the main body of Greek archaeological bibliography, which is complemented by the publications of the Archaeological Service, the periodicals Archaiologikon Deltion (AD), Archaiologika Analekta ex Athenon (ΑΑΑ) and the series “Demosieumata tou Archaiologikou Deltiou”.

In earlier years, the responsibility of editing the texts of the Society’s publications lay with the Secretary. Later on, it was taken over by a person employed in an office or by a Member of the Board, such as Athanasios Koumanoudis, Kyriakos Mylonas, Valerios Stais and, particularly, Vasileios Leonardos.

After World War I, the philologist Artemisia Giannoulatou (1909-1977), student of G. Oikonomos and A. Orlandos’ assistant at the University of Athens, took over the publications. Thanks to her exquisite background in philology, her popularity among archaeologists and her diligence she managed to aptly support the Society’s increasing publications activity for years. Today the Society features a special Publications Office with dedicated sufficient scholarly personnel, analogous to the number of publications.
